The is basically Istanbul’s version of London’s Oyster card (if you’re from southern England or have ever visited London this is probably all you need to know).

Where is the Istanbulkart used?

It is used to get on public transport including:

  1. Ferry going between regions of Istanbul on the Bosphorus (but does not include Bosphorus tours which are run privately and not related to goverment)
  2. The Tram on Istiklal Street as well as the Funikuler and Trams going through Sultanahmet.
  3. The Metro-bus line
  4. The Metro Train Line
  5. The Cable car in Eyup

Where do you get one & what cost?

The card is sold in many small news agents dotted around Istanbul, but the easiest way to get one would be at a major transit terminal such as Ataturk Airport, Eminonu & Sultanahmet from vending machines. At these vending machines, simply put a 10tl note into the machine and it will give you a card with 4tl credit. I would suggest topping it up with a 20tl note instantly.

Other Facts

  1. One card can be used for up to 5 people
  2. Each Journey costs between 3-5tl per person and can be used for up to 5 transfers within a 2 hour period
