  1. Istanbul is the largest city which spans two continents (Europe & Asia).
    1. Smaller Cities to name a few include:
      1. Suez, Egypt (Africa & Asia)
      2. Orenburg, Russia (Europe & Asia)
      3. Magnitogorsk, Russia (Europe & Asia)
  2. Istanbul is not actually the capital city of Turkey, Ankara is.
  3. The first man to fly from Europe to Asia was Hezarfen Ahmet Çelebi in 1632AD. (Read more about that here)
  4. The Grand Bazaar located in Istanbul is the largest covered market in the world with over 4,000 shops!
  5. The Funicular in Tunel, Beyoglu at the end of Istiklal Street (near Taksim Square) was built in 1875 making it the third oldest subway in the world. FYI: The Funicular is an excellent way to travel from Kabatas to Taksim avoiding a long hill!
  6. The population of Istanbul is ~ 14 million compared to London’s ~8.8 million!
  7. The Hagia Sophia was built as an Orthodox Christian Cathedral but was converted to a mosque in 1453. In 1935 it was changed to a Museum.
  8. Istanbul, Like Rome was built on 7 hills. These hills are each topped by an Imperial Mosque.
  9. Istanbul used to be named Constantinople
  10. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk was an Army office who founded the Republic of Turkey. He ensured that schools were free to attend, encouraging Education. He made women have equal political and social rights before many western countries. You will find that Ataturk is extremely popular amongst Turkish Citizens and will see his face in many places.
  11. The Blue Mosque is the only mosque in Istanbul with 6 marinets. This is the maximum that a mosque can have.
